You might have heard of Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000-hour rule - you put in the time, and you’ll master the craft - be it piano, chess, or writing.
Dating, it turns out, doesn’t work that way.
You can clock in all the hours and still end up right where you started - only older, more tired and a LOT more cynical.
The Wall Street Journal ran a story on women giving up on marriage and featured, Katie, a 30-year-old entrepreneur from New York. She’d gone on dating spree the previous year - hit the apps hard, dating 3/4 men a week for six months (!), to fulfill her mom’s dream of finding someone by Christmas. And this is what she said to sum up her ordeal: “Dating is the only thing you can put 10,000 hours into and end up right where you started.”
Katie is not an outlier. A lot of women have decided they'd rather stay single than settle for a man who isn't the right fit.
The Wall Street Journal reported it from the women’s POV: over 51% are single, and the author’s takeaway was pretty simple: the problem was men who don’t measure up.
The Washington Times ran the same story from the men’s side: 66% of men are single, and pointed the finger right back at educated, financially independent women with unrealistic expectations.
Two big newsrooms. Same crime scene. Two different suspects??
Help me make sense of this: on the one hand, we’ve more than 30 million single men actively looking, and on the other, 26 million single women - serious about marriage, like Katie. Yet they’re about to throw in the towel because they can't find the right guy?
The receipts

The original Wall Street Journal and Washington Times articles behind the numbers.
Both stories state the problem perfectly - with statistics and all - but leave out the blood on the floor.
The Washington Times wants to push the story that it’s the lack of blue-collar jobs behind why men are single. Yet there are roughly 7.5 million vacant blue-collar jobs right now - so that’s clearly not the issue. The WSJ angle is that women are thriving - and thriving women have simply stopped needing men.
Neither are wrong, but both skirt around the real causes.
So, I went to the boots on the ground: 400+ comments by real singles talking about this in real time on a Christian forum. Here’s what they said.
Real reason #1: Men are scared
The same line kept showing up. Approaching a woman today feels like walking through a minefield. One guy put it plainly: getting “put on blast all over social media” is a real fear - false accusations that can ruin a guy’s reputation.
And then there’s another fear: what if you finally get married - and it still falls apart? Divorce isn’t just messy - you’ll lose half of what you’ve built. Whether that fear is overblown or not, it’s real enough that plenty of men have simply stopped trying.
Real reason #2: Why buy what’s free?
This reason came up so many times, almost word for word, it stopped being funny. “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?” One man even traced it back to his own grandmother - who said the exact line was used sixty years ago, back when the free-love movement started. The difference now is the apps made it exponentially easier - you hook up with someone in literally just two swipes.
Real reason #3: Porn
A woman in the thread dropped a stat from Barna's 2024 research: 75% of Christian men report using pornography at some level! Seventy-five percent of church-going Christians! She said she'd rather ‘stay single and at peace than marry a man who isn't godly in his heart, in public, and in private.'
The media talks about jobs and financial independence all day long, but they go selectively quiet on this - the real issue plaguing our society.
Real Reason #4: Hypergamy
One guy put it this way: “Dating today feels like looking through a deck of cards for a single queen when there are 51 jokers, and you have to reshuffle every time you pick a card.”
Men, even those who may be a five or six on the scale, still think they deserve a nine or ten. Women do the same thing - pass over plenty of decent, stable, regular guys in favor of a shrinking pool of “high-status” men.
Scott Galloway has pointed to this 80/20 pattern in the raw swipe data on popular dating apps - 80% of women compete for a small share of top men, while most of the men fight over the leftover 20%. Whichever way you slice it, you're left with a majority that’s unhappily single.
Real reason #5: Boys, not men
We’ve raised a generation of boys without fathers or older mentors. No one stepped in to model how to be a husband and a father in real life. You simply cannot turn a boy into a man with a four-week sermon series.
Real reason #6: Worldly feminism
Decades of secular feminist messaging and the cultural obsession with female independence have rebranded marriage as constricting, unappealing, and unnecessary.
At the same time, many fundamentalist churches twist scripture to treat women like second-class citizens, which only fuels the fire. The world happily swoops in like a knight in shining armor, tells her sweet little lies to lure her away - not just from these churches, but from the living God altogether.
So who’s actually right?
The Washington Times isn't wrong - there are men out there still living in their parents' basement who'd rather game than build a life.
The Journal isn't wrong either - plenty of women are standing on their own feet and simply refuse to lower their standards for a man who won't rise to meet them.
But the media does what it always does - it only highlights the causes that fit its narrative. The real people, the boots on the ground, know the issue isn't the economy or the education gap. It’s fear. It’s hook-up culture. It’s porn, absentee fathers, and the politics that profit from it all.
What the Bible says
Before God gave Adam a wife, He gave him work. Tend the garden, name the animals. carry real responsibility. Marriage wasn't the starting line - it came further down the road. Women need men who are marriage-ready. Not a project.
Ephesians 5 doesn't start and stop with “submission “ - it tells men to love their wives the way Christ loved the church - sacrificially, even unto death. That kind of love is a muscle. It gets built over years, in the small, unseen decisions, long before anyone ever walks down the aisle.
And Paul's list for elders: self-controlled, respectable, able to manage his own household, not a lover of money - is literally the same list that makes a man worth marrying. A church that won't form men like that shouldn't be surprised when the women stop looking for men inside its walls.
Where this leaves us
The data isn't the crisis - that's just the smoke detector. The actual fire is the culture we're in - and the Church with its head buried in the sand.
Dating for 10000 hours may do nothing more than waste your time, if the culture around you hasn’t changed. But you can be the difference - get self-disciplined, get productive, & break free from secular programming. That said, whether we’re single or not, actively searching or taking a sabbatical: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
