The Importance of Being "Chalant"
Don’t care too much. Don’t text back too fast. Don’t feel too deeply.
Somewhere along the way, being nonchalant became the most wanted personality goal.
Be unbothered. Be cool. Be emotionally unavailable.
But here’s the thing: nonchalant was never really cool. It was just fear in a nice outfit.
If we look at Christ and how He lived, He was the complete opposite of nonchalant in most cases. He wept openly (John 11:35). He flipped tables (Matthew 21:12). He gave up His life for us. He loved people on purpose, loudly, repeatedly, even when it cost Him something. Revelation 3:16 literally warns against being lukewarm. Not cold. Not hot. Just… meh. God’s not into indifference.
Christ cared deeply. He noticed people everyone else ignored. He stopped for the woman at the well. He healed on the Sabbath knowing it would upset people. He loved with urgency. With intention. With presence.\
So what does that look like for us? It means answering the text when you want to answer it. It means saying "I care about you" out loud. It means not pretending Friday night's plans don't matter to you when they do.
The truth is, yes, caring is vulnerable. Being invested means you almost always will get hurt. But Scripture NEVER tells us to guard our hearts by shutting them down; rather by rooting them in love and truth. “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). Not apathy. Not distance. Love.
What if this new year, we pick the braver option to feel, to show up, to care visibly and unapologetically? In other words, be chalant. Be very chalant.
